Historisch ist die Schlei bedeutend, da hier bereits im Mittelalter die Wikinger in Haithabu ein Handelszentrum errichteten. Heute ist die Schlei ein beliebtes Ziel für Natur- und Kulturinteressierte, mit Sehenswürdigkeiten wie dem Leuchtturm in Schleimünde, der kürzlich restauriert wurde, und der Möweninsel vor Schleswig.
